In the heart of Rumonge town, Mugomere Primary School is facing a critical situation. Over the past seven years, some of its classrooms have collapsed multiple times due to extreme weather. Most recently, in April, heavy rains accompanied by strong winds destroyed six classrooms and severely damaged more than 240 roofing sheets.

As a result, over 600 students are left without proper classrooms. Some are learning under trees, exposed to the elements, while nearly 500 have taken temporary shelter in a nearby church building. Sadly, over 100 children have not returned to school at all due to the harsh learning conditions.

Teachers are doing their best under difficult circumstances. One of them shared, “It’s very difficult to teach a first-grade child without using a chalkboard.”

The school’s headmaster, Mr. Niyongabo Nicaise, held a meeting with parent representatives, but the situation is far beyond what the local community can handle. He is now appealing to the government, local leaders, NGOs, and kindhearted individuals to help restore and rebuild the school.

At the Khaldun Foundation, we stand in solidarity with the students and staff of Mugomere. We are actively working to bring immediate relief and long-term solutions.

Let’s act now. These children deserve better.
